The Impact of Formation Water Salinity on the Formation Resistivity Factor

The objective of this study is to develop a new empirical correlation to determine the formation resistivity factor (Fr) as a function of porosity, similar to approaches adopted in previous research. In addition, the study examines the effect of formation-water salinity on the resistivity factor.
Core samples from three different oil fields in Libya’s Sirte Basin were selected for analysis. A portion of the laboratory measurements was conducted at the Libyan Petroleum Institute (LPI) in Tripoli, Libya. Several empirical correlations were formulated to quantify the influence of salinity on the formation resistivity factor. Among these, the best-fit correlation demonstrated the highest correlation coefficient, providing the most accurate representation of salinity’s impact on Fr.
